The Catalina 42 has earned an international reputation as the leader in her class. By leading in design, cruising performance, and comfort, the Catalina 42 has become the first choice of sailors worldwide. The hull of the 42 MkII is high volume, and easily driven, with a fine entry, firm midship section, and smooth run aft terminating in a modified reverse transom with an uncommonly spacious and functional boarding platform. A long, horizontal skeg runs aft between the fin and the rudder for sure tracking. The rudder is large and balanced, ensuring control in all conditions. The Catalina 42 MkII deck was designed with shorthanded sailing in mind. All the halyards, the mainsheet and the single line main reefing controls are led to the cockpit and placed to be operated from under the dodger when necessary. The wide weather decks and inboard shroud base make passage forward easy and secure. The bow roller and below decks electric windlass greatly simplify anchor handling. The two cabin arrangements feature varnished teak joinery and ash side paneling on the hull. Excellent light and ventilation are provided naturally from aluminum-framed opening hatches and ports. Numerous recessed halogen lights offer an inviting ambiance.
Cruising class in Marina Del Rey first place for whole 24 race season in cruising class A + combined cruising classes.
Also won Champion of Champions race against all the first-place boats including 2 other Catalina 42 that had won in prior years.
Won the Cruising non spinnaker class in the big Newport to Ensenada race 3 years ago.
- (2) New 6-Volt House Batteries-June 2024
- New Electric Bilge Pump-June 2024
FYI, The Catalina 42 was voted the best overall 40’ish foot boat for years by the boating magazines
some years ago. It is not just a coastal cruiser but is a full blue water cruiser and cruising class racer.
My Time 3 was 2013 Champion Cruising Class Racer in the very popular Wednesday night race
series at California Yacht Club, Marina Del Rey. In 2013 we won Both Cruising Class categories.
Cruise A, Combined Cruising A & B (about 35 racers) and later won the Champion of Champions
Invitational Race that year.
My Time3 also won the famous Newport to Ensenada Race in 2021 for Cruising Class Race by 5
hours!! That was the only time she did that race.
FYI, this boat also has a very special 3 blade Feathering prop. It is much faster than the standard
prop on most boats. It is about $3000 extra cost on a new boat.
Note that because the current owner is more performance oriented. Some of the boat’s equipment
was removed to save weight, etc. All these items are stored in the owner’s garage and will be
returned to the boat and if desired, will re-install them. These include the cockpit dining table, main
anchor with 100 feet of chain with 300 feet of high-end rode. Plus, the stern Danford anchor and rode.
Plus, miscellaneous other parts.
There is also a spinnaker with additional spinnaker sheets and lines. Plus, a Kevlar 155 % racing
Genoa, both available at a reasonable price.
Also, in place of the old original navigation instruments. I use the latest Navionics mapping and
navigation software installed on an I- Pad and any additional I-Phones etc. For this setup, there are
Wi-Fi modules located behind the breaker panel and these wirelessly interface all the other
instruments data to the I-Pad and any additional I-Phones for navigation etc.. See the attached
screen shot as a partial example of its capabilities. Note this choice of Nav instruments allows for
cheap and easy updates and added programs. With fixed NAV instruments, you’re stuck as it is.
Bottom was painted in November 2022. Also, the whole boat was buffed out and waxed and new steaming light assembly installed at the same time. The previous bottom paint lasted 4 ½ years and was still in pretty good for that age. Also, the Auto Stream prop was re-greased then. And a new leather steering wheel cover was installed. A new Main Halyard 7/16" of top racing grade Spectra line with a titanium snap shackle was installed last year. FYI, Just the shackle is over $100. The halyard line costs about $400. Genoa Halyard was replaced about 7 years ago. The main sail cover was just re-stitched, and all new snaps installed. The whole genoa UV cover was replaced about 6 months ago by UK Sails of Santa Ana. I also did a heavy coat of 303 UV waterproof protectant on all the blue canvas about 4-6 months ago. It is good for 2-3 years. It's $110 per gallon, but it is the best. The standing rigging Is likely original and in very good shape. All the sheets are about 5 years old and are always machine washed 2-3 times per year and are in good shape. I had the Genoa completed repaired and heavily re-stitched and a new blue UV cover on the Genoa. All done by UK Sails in Santa Ana in 10/21. Replace 2 top hatched lenses, new topping lift plus lot of misc. rigging. Total cost $1035 on 03/07/2017. The entire electric head in the master cabin was replaced about 2-3 years ago. The entire manual head in the main cabin was replaced about 6 months ago. I bought a new custom designed main sail made by UK sails in Venice, CA about 9 years ago. Includes enlarged luff area, (faster) one step heavier sail material and triple reef option installed. Includes all new battens and cars etc. (I had ideas of heading offshore at that time). FYI, last fall we sailed to Catalina in 35 Kt apparent with full main only at close haul at 6.5 Kt boat speed. Smooth as can be. No big deal for this main sail and boat. I got a new Temporary Import Permit for Mexico 10/29/22. The previous owner lost theirs in a house fire. That cost me over $1,000 and almost a week extra time in Mexico. Note this is required to bring a boat into Mexico. If the boat had a permit and it is renewed it's not too big a cost. But replacing an expired or lost one if very difficult and expensive. FYI, the main boat repair place in Ensenada is Baha Naval. They do GREAT work and are far cheaper than in the US. Plus, I make a little vacation out of it. FYI, I have been going there on my good friend's boat and mine for about 35 years. FYI, This is just some additional info. for My Time 3 C-42 Mark 2 hull 747. Originally built for Frank Butler, the owner of Catalina Yachts. So, EVERYTHING was made PERFECT for him. Named "The Butler Did It". FYI, This boat is FAST, strong and very stable. She loves to reach. At 20Kt of wind she will sail at 8.5+ Kts in flat seas. I had her on a broad reach in pretty big seas surfing very stable doing 13-14 Kt most of the night. She is not just a coastal cruise. Several C42 have raced the Transpac race to Hawaii multiple times. Others to Australia etc. Hope this is helpful.
