1997 Block Island 40
"MANITOU" is an excellent example of the popular Block Island 40. Recent upgrades include new standing rigging, new electronics and new dodger.
In April 2024, the electronics were upgraded with a Raymarine ES9 multi-function device and a new Quantum Radar. A new I70 repeated for wind/depth and speed, a Raymarine AIS 650 was installed, and a new West Marine BHF 585 was installed at the nav station. The rigging and mast step were replaced in 2023.
A change in the owner's plans has made this fine yacht available. The bottom was repainted in September 2021, and the max prop was coated with prop speed. Manitou was sailed in the Chesapeake Bay until being sold and shipped to the West Coast in 2017.

"In his book, Choice Yacht Designs, Richard Henderson credits the inspiration of the Block Island 40 to the Sparkman & Stephens-designed Finnisterre, a centerboard yawl that won the Bermuda Race three consecutive times. That boat led to the production model Nevins 40, and later to several similar boats by other designers. The Block Island 40 and Hinckley Bermuda 40, both drawn by William H. Tripp, Jr., are the best known. All of these classic designs are stunningly beautiful examples of the now-bygone era of proper sailing yachts. They are incredibly sea kindly vessels with the visual elegance and grace of mythical goddesses." Manitou was built by Migrator Yachts, the most recent of the respected builders of the Block Island 40. Manitou has been well maintained and is an excellent example of classic boatbuilding.
Maintou features a traditional accommodation plan. The interior is finished with all vertical surfaces of off-white laminate or teak marine plywood trimmed with solid teak. The cabin sole is solid teak and is in excellent condition. The headliner was replaced by Hinckley in 2016. Ash ceiling strips line the hull outboard of the berths, and all woodwork is finished in rubbed effect varnish. All the lockers have louvered doors for ventilation, and passage doors are paneled teak; the cabin cushions are light teal Ultrasuede, and the forward berth cushions were replaced in January 2022.
The owner's stateroom features traditional V-berths that are 6'8" long with 5" cushions (new in 2022). A filler cushion completes the berths to form a double. Ash ceiling strips line the hull, and there is a bureau with two drawers, two lockers, a hanging locker, and additional storage under the berths. There are two bulkhead-mounted lights and an overhead light. Ventilation is provided by 2 opening ports and a large overhead hatch. There is a door from the stateroom to the head as well.
Aft, to port, is the spacious head area, which is accessible from the main salon. The head features a molded shower pan with teak grates, a vanity with a stainless steel sink and showerhead/faucet, and a vanity with storage and a towel storage cabinet. It was replaced in May 2024 with a Groco Model K Unit. The head has an overboard discharge and a 30-gallon holding tank. A dorade vent and an opening port provide ventilation. A hanging locker and a chest of drawers are directly across from the head.
The main cabin layout consists of a U-shaped settee to port with a floor-mounted custom fold-out table. When unfolded, there is seating for eight on the starboard settee and the U-shaped port settee. All interior upholstery is teal Ultrasuede and is in beautiful condition. Interior appointments such as rugs and pillows are included. The settee can be used as a single berth. Storage is found behind the backrest, with lockers and a large storage shelf above. Both port and starboard berths are equipped with lee clothes. Ventilation is provided by a large overhead Lewmar hatch, a dorade vent, and eight opening ports for excellent ventilation. A new "Sound Down" headliner was installed at Hinckley (2016). Manitou has reverse-cycle air conditioning at the dock (inoperable and needs a new control unit) and an Espar diesel heater. (The Espar unit is currently nonfunctional yet fully ducted, wired, and plumbed to diesel.) Aft of the main cabin, to the port of the companionway, is the U-shaped galley, designed for use while sailing offshore. A large, insulated, 7.5 cu. Ft. refrigerator with a Sea Frost refrigeration system, engine-driven compressor, and cold plate. A gimbaled Force 10 Propane stove with an oven and a cover to expand counter space is outboard in the galley. A safety bar and harness hooks are installed for cooking when underway. Aft is a double Stainless-Steel sink with a hot and cold pressure water faucet. There is an additional storage locker under the sink above the counters, and the sink has large storage lockers, dish racks, and drawers. Ventilation is provided with a large outboard opening port and a cockpit port.
The navigation station is on the starboard of the companionway, and the forward-facing navigation table features a lift-up top with storage and several drawers below. There is a seat with storage under it, followed by a hanging locker with a louvered teak door. On the outboard side of the nav station are the VHF radio, Autohelm multi-display (unused), 2- 12v outlet, and stereo. Aft of the nav station is a large hanging locker with a teak louvered door. Above the removable engine covers and companionway ladder are the 110V and 12V electrical panels a Blue Seas M2 battery monitor and battery switches. The ladder and engine cover are easily removed to provide access to the Yanmar diesel and its components.
The Galley is located to port at the base of the companionway and features:
